Pop Culture Lessons: What Dory has Taught Us About Life

Standard

Finding Nemo is not just for kids! I repeat… Finding Nemo is not exclusively for kids. In fact, it’s for you, the stressed, the tired, the weary, the almost-giving-up type, the one desiring to quit but still deciding. It’s for us! And DORY is the reason why.

If you’re at a similar situation as the descriptions above, run to Dory and she’ll tell you this: JUST KEEP SWIMMING!

So while you’re waiting for that situation at work to improve (a promotion, a vindication from accusations and the likes), JUST KEEP SWIMMING.

So while you’re waiting to see an improvement in school (thesis proposal to be approved, groupmates to stop being lazy, tuition to be paid and the likes), JUST KEEP SWIMMING.

Today, remember that you can get by. Not just that, you can choose to live joyfully. Always keep your head above water. And JUST KEEP SWIMMING!

Final na! I’m Voting For ________ Today

Standard

My vote. The power of choosing. And where my hope comes from.

It’s an inescapable topic these days: who are you voting for this election! Whether from the free world, USA, or here, this is what most people are talking about. While a lot of friends have been very sure of who they’re voting for this May, I could only listen to them coz I was still uncertain. But I’ve made up my mind.

MY VOTE

If election were to happen today, I am still undecided. But if voting would mean having to choose between choices by voicing out, then that’s what I’m so sure of.

Final na toh! Today, I’m voting for:

Choice: Status Quo vs. Change (I choose change!)

THE POWER OF CHOICE

There’s power in choosing. Once we elect a president, we are the ones who have ushered him/her to power. If nobody votes, it will be an invalid election.

Let’s put that into a daily perspective. Everyday, we can choose to do something between two choices– to remain the same or to change. To stick with the status quo or to contribute to change.

Which one have we been choosing?

csj6fzquwaaempc

I think about the privilege of being a campus missionary. Reaching students. Coaching them to be Christ-followers. Mentoring them so they can be agents of change themselves. And what if among these students comes the next president of the Philippines?

Whatever you do and wherever you’re situated (homemaker, employee, boss of the company, schools), you don’t have to wait for election day to choose change. You can do it today. You have the privilege to change the world as well even in little ways.

How? If I’m talking to Christians in this part, maybe the biggest change we can contribute to this nation is in exemplifying Christ-likeness in our social media posts. Are we so sold out to our choice that we forget about SELF-CONTROL, LOVE for others and it’s so easy for us to join in the MUDSLINGING as if it will change the world. Go be a Christian. That’s how you change the world.

Guys, our hope comes from the Sovereign Ruler. We can look forward to a new way of leadership from a new president but ultimately our hope lies in the God of the universe.

I will vote. That’s a must! And I will carefully and prayerfully choose who to vote for. But my hope? Still comes from God. As the psalmist said, “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.” (Psalm 62:5)

Undecided who to vote for? This blog from Pastor Joey Bonifacio might help you in your filters. Click this.

Now, let’s go and change the world!

For me today, it means talking to our would-be campus missionaries one-by-one and give them honest & life-giving evaluations so they would be guided as they start reaching students next month! The impact of that is unimaginable– students all over the Philippines and the world taking part in the change of their lives which in turn will be felt in society.

What can you do today to change OUR nation?

Did you know?

A good, simple read about stars and the Maker of stars.

nomanschild

According to Wikipedia, horoscopes claim to explain aspects of a person’s personality and predict future events in their life based on the patterns of the sun, moon, and other celestial objects at the time of their birth.

I found out that there are people who live for other “stars” who do not even know that they exist.

My question is why look at the stars and how they shine for you when you can “Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things” (Isaiah 4:26 KJV)?

Papa & the Son: An Easter Sunday Confession

Standard

This is my father, my Papa.

papa

He’s Robinson Harbay Wahiman. And I love him.

His passions– serving others & watching the drama shows my mother loves to watch. Short to say that he loves my mother no matter their differences. Emphasis on differences.

When I was in my elementary years (5 to 12), there were many times he came home drunk. But he was never violent. Some of those nights were to simply socialize with our neighbors and his friends. Some of those times were maybe for some other reasons that I completely understand now that I am raising my own family as well.

My greatest memory with him? He brought me to the hospital for my circumcision. We never played basketball together. But he spent time with me by fetching me from school and we would bike home. I loved those times.

pg

In high school, our family setup was different. Mother left for Israel to provide for us. Father took the role of being our ‘carer’ which to me was strange.

My confession: I got bitter with that setup and disrespected him a lot of times. When God changed me, I had to repent of all those times. My father didn’t deserve those treatments at all.

Jesus Christ started changing me. I started to understand the gospel: I am a sinner and I need a savior. He is Jesus Christ who died for my sins. The death I should have died. On the third day he rose again proving that He is the Son of God and offering the gift of salvation and forgiveness of sins for all who repent and believe.

Before becoming a Christ-follower, I remember helping him in his campaign to be one of the kagawads in his hometown. He lost. But I felt like I won. Because at those months I helped in his campaign, I saw how he was sincere in serving the people. He was real to the people. He didn’t have money but his sincerity to serve them through a leadership role was overflowing. I felt it. After that season came my salvation story. God saved me.

A few months after, Papa started coming to church with me. It was my brother who invited him. Eventually, he received Jesus as his Lord & savior again. And his life started changing as well.

He was imperfect like everyone else. Imperfect like me. We both were changed by one man– Jesus Christ.

This blog is about two things, my father and the Son. First, about Papa who deserves this written honor. I love you, Papa! (I love you, Mama also. A blog about her next time.) And second, about Jesus Christ who transformed our lives.

Today, Papa and I love Jesus Christ.

Today, whatever you went through with your dad whether good or bad, look up coz it’s Easter. Today is the best time to look up to God, the Father almighty, and receive His love through Jesus Christ, His son. He enables us to love no matter what.

Now, what’s your story? You and your dad and Jesus Christ. Leave a comment or write a blog about it. Many need to hear that. Share the Good News.

Happy Easter!

#MayKasalananAkoSayo Trending Ba Talaga Sa Puso Natin?

Standard

Trending ngayon sa Twitter are hashtag na #MayKasalananAkoSayo on Holy Wednesday (Monster Radio is doing the The Top 10 #MayKasalananAkoSayo that’s why). I have two questions to hopefully help us reflect this Holy Week with this hashtag.

1. Is this hashtag trending in our hearts as well?

We can trend it on Twitter but is it really trending in our hearts?

As a student back then, I was always wondering how it feels to steal a bar of chocolate from the convenience store. Add to that the fun that me and my friends would have talking about crazy stuff we did. So I did!

A year after, God changed my life. When I was looking back at the wrong things I’ve done, that bar of chocolate magnified itself in my imagination. Repentant, this hashtag trended in my heart, “LORD, #maykasalananakosayo …”

Convicted, I went to the convenience store and left an amount of money ten times the price of the chocolate bar.

2. If it is trending in our hearts, are we saying it to Jesus Christ or someone else?

Anyone can say #MayKasalananAkoSayo sa girlfriend, sa boyfriend, sa asong parang best friend, sa best friend, sa parents, sa text mate, sa crush mong hindi ka crush. Pero sinasabi ba natin yan to Jesus Christ?

We commit mistakes against people but ultimately we our sins are against GOD.

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” Romans 3:23

Lahat tayo may kasalanan sa Diyos. But it doesn’t stop there.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23

God didn’t leave us behind with no choice but a sinful life. He made a way. And it’s through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. When we put our faith in what Christ has done for us on the cross, we receive eternal life.

This Holy Week, take the time to allow God speak to you. The things you need to hear from God, the things you need to repent for. Acknowledge it and turn to Jesus Christ.

Leaving you with a song to worship God with.

30th EDSA Anniversary, One Republic’s Something I Need and Dying to Self

Standard

Woke up today hearing OneRepublic’s Something I Need song in my mind. Don’t know why. Read my Bible. Checked the news. And now, using logic to connect the three.

People Power Anniversary

Today marks the 30th anniversary of one of the most historical rallies in the world– EDSA People Power! It wasn’t just a rally. It was a nation clamoring for change. It was more than just a clamor, it was the citizens’ LOVE for nation that made them go out to the streets and risk what they had, their very lives.

Something I Need

Been running on my mind. OneRepublic has the knack of writing songs that not just resound in the listeners’ minds but in their hearts as well. I really didn’t know the exact lyrics so I looked up and here’s the part that I can sing… oh no, I can’t sing well. But let me put it up here:

You got something I need

In this world full of people there’s one killing me

And if we only die once,

I wanna die with you

What a love song! LOVE that goes as far as DEATH.

Dying to Self

EDSA People Power– love for nation goes as far as dying for country.

Something I Need– love for someone goes as far as dying for him/her.

Both these require DYING TO SELF. Sounds difficult for a selfie generation. This concept led me back to this Bible verse:

23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.

-Luke 9:23, 24

There’s a love worthy of death. Something that transcends beyond this lifetime, something… eternal. The past weeks have been full of hatred globally. But greater love led one life to death for all so our sins would have to be paid for– the death of Jesus Christ. This is for all. Not just to this kind of sin or that. But for all including the ones who think they don’t have one and easy to cast stones. For all.

This revelation of God’s love brought about love revolution. A revolution that allows one to die to self.

In simple terms, because God loves me, Jesus Christ became the sacrifice to pay the penalty of my sins. Now, I can love Him. Because I love God, I will follow Jesus. To follow Jesus, I have to die to myself.

This is, to me, the most powerful revolution I’ve experienced in my own heart. That’s why I can sing the song thinking about Jesus Christ.

You got something I need

In this world full of people there’s one killing me

And if we only die once,

I wanna die with you

Now that was random! Anyway, ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY!
